It is a division ratio of a section or other measurement, where the ratio of the sum to the larger part is the same as the ratio of the larger part to the smaller part.

A section AB of length l is divided internally by point T so that length f of the larger part TB becomes the mean between lengths n of the smaller and the whole section. Consequently, the rule can be expressed as AB : TB = TB : TA. The division that is thus produced is referred to as the golden ratio of section AB. The ratio between the two parts TB : TA is referred to as the golden number.
